The Veteran’s Cup

On 10 November 2007, the Buffalo Gap Chips Base Ball Club traveled to Boerne, Texas, to play in the first annual Veteran’s Cup Tournament sponsored by the Agricultural Heritage Museum.  The Chips matched up against the Boerne White Sox for a couple of textbook defensive bouts.

In game 1, the Chips gained a sense of the defense they faced when they garnered 12 singles and 2 doubles but were only able to score 3 aces.  The bats of Damon “D2” Rose, “Ranger” Don Connel, & Paul “Pops” Garrett advanced the base runners and drove in each of the aces.  The Chips defense, anchored by the hurling of Warren “Spider” Simpson & Wade “Ghost” Goolsby, held the White Sox to 5 singles & 2 doubles and allowed only 1 ace.  A particularly nice play was Scott “Sudden Sam” Horn catching a struck ball on 1 bound in left field, then throwing home to Joel “Flaps” Brant to complete the double play.

Unlikely as it sounds, the defenses stiffened in game 2.  The Chips struck 9 singles and 3 doubles, resulting in 3 aces.  The Sox were held to 2 singles by the outstanding hurling of Warren “Spider” Simpson & Wade “Ghost” Goolsby and the outstanding fielding of Scott “Sudden Sam” Horn, Damon “D2” Rose, Alex “Roscoe” Oroscoe, and Clay “Stick” Shelton.  Damon “D2” Rose was honored as the Most Valuable Striker after hitting 7 to 9 with 2 doubles and 5 singles.  Warren “Spider” Simpson was honored as the Most Valuable Hurler.
