Buffalo Hunting Program
SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2003
Buffalo Gap Historic Village will be hosting a buffalo hunting living history
program on Saturday, April 5. Living History interpreters Henry Crawford
and Clive Siegle will do a hands-on demonstration and explain various aspects
of buffalo hunting during the 1870’s. Buffalo Gap was one of the main locations
for buffalo hunting activities during the “Great Slaughter” of the Southern
herd. Some of the only documented photos of buffalo hunters in Texas were
taken at and around Buffalo Gap in 1874. Copies of these photos are now
on display in a special exhibit at the Village.
While the buffalo hunting period was brief, it had dramatic effects on
the settlement of the region and the containment of the Comanche Indians. Many of the buffalo hunters became ranchers and farmers and returned with
their families to settle here. J. Knight was one such former hunter, whose
family cabin still stands as part of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village.
The program will run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission is $5 for adults
and $2 for children.
