Dinner With Davy Crockett

When: Monday, February 18, 2002 at 7:00 P.M.
Where: Perini's Steak House
Cost: $30 per person.
Seating will be limited to 40 people.

Dinner will consist of ranch roast ribeye,
cowboy potatoes, and bread pudding.
There will be a cash bar available.

The feature of the evening will be Jeff Bearden doing a first person presentation in the character of Davy Crockett. Mr. Bearden has been doing Davy Crockett for several years and has presented this program to various schools and historic organizations throughout Texas. He has also portrayed Davy for both the Discovery and History Channel’s documentaries on the Alamo. This chance to jump into the past is in conjunction with the 166th anniversary of Texas independence.

The Davy Crockett dinner kicked off this year’s McWhiney Foundation events calendar, and it proved to be very popular.

At this one-of-a-kind event, living history interpreter Jeff Beardon portrayed the late congressman and Alamo hero from Tennessee.

Originally scheduled for one appearance on Monday, February 18, in front of forty people at the Perini Ranch Steakhouse, the event was advertised in the Abilene Reporter News in hopes that we would sell enough tickets. Only four days after the announcement, we had sold out the event and had a waiting list of twenty other history enthusiasts who wanted to participate.

Kevin Young, Special Events and Interpretive Coordinator for the foundation, convinced Beardon and restaurant owner Tom Perini to add an extra evening on Sunday, February 17. When word of the additional performance circulated, tickets sold quickly.

Over the two nights, we ended up with more than eighty in attendance, all of whom seemed to have a great time talking with this “historical” figure. With the proceeds of this successful fundraiser, we were able to preserve one of our most impressive cultural assets by replacing the leaking roof on the Knight-Sayles Cabin.

The Davy Crockett dinner was graciously sponsored
by Dr. B.B. and Mrs. Peggy Trotter.
