The Texas Frontier Heritage and Cultural Center™
presents:
BASTILLE DAY

|
| To us, it's just July 14. But to the French, it’s Bastille Day, celebrated
with fireworks the way we celebrate the 4th of July. Like our 4th, it marks
a seminal event in French (and world) history — the fall of the Bastille
and the start of the French Revolution. What was the Bastille? What caused
the French Revolution? Pack your freedom fries and head down to the Village
to find out! Dr. Gary Shanafelt, professor of history at McMurry University,
will explain how it all happened, through a slide show of contemporary
paintings and drawings to illustrate his points. |

| This lecture is the eighth in our new Chautauqua Learning Series. The Learning Series is based on the Chautauqua
movement which spread throughout the rural United States in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. It provided educational lectures and entertainment
for average Americans before the advent of mass media like radio and television.
Past lectures have spanned a wide range of subjects, such as the concept
of Southern honor, the first Thanksgiving, and how Christianity has dealt with religious diversity. The Texas Frontier Heritage and Cultural
Center™ is proud to continue the spirit of that tradition in the unique
setting of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. |
