You don’t have to be a Civil War buff to have heard of battles like Bull
Run or Gettysburg or the siege of Vicksburg. Less known is the battle of
Corinth, Mississippi, in the fall of 1862. Corinth was a major railroad
junction, and its possession was critical for both the North and the South
if they were to be successful in the western theater of the war. Today,
the National Park Service maintains an interpretive center in Corinth for
visitors from across the nation.
Our ninth Chautauqua lecture will be presented by Than Dossman, who has literally written the book on the battle. The book is Campaign for Corinth: Blood in Mississippi, a volume in the McWhiney Press Battles and Commanders of the Civil War
series. Than researched and wrote the initial manuscript as his honors
thesis at McMurry University, where he was awarded his B.A. degree in 2006.
He is currently a graduate student in history at Texas Christian University
in Fort Worth.
Copies of the book can be purchased in the Village mercantile, and at an
attractive discount from the official retail price.

| Our Chautauqua Learning Series is based on the Chautauqua movement which spread throughout
the rural United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It provided
educational lectures and entertainment for average Americans before the
advent of mass media like radio and television. The Texas Frontier Heritage
and Cultural Center™ is proud to continue the spirit of that tradition
in the unique setting of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. |
