In October of 2002, H.K. Edgerton gained international attention (and controversy) with a 1,600-mile “Walk Across Dixie” to honor the Southern Confederate heritage and protest “the wholesale
and deliberate destruction of the positive aspects of Southern history
by self-serving politicians and the media.” What made his actions so controversial
is the fact that Edgerton is an African-American, not a white, and the
president of Southern Heritage 411, an organization that honors the Confererate South. Now, Edgerton is retracing
points in his march of 2002, and will speak at the Village on December
16th. Is the controversy about him justified, or is he saying things that
need to be said? Be sure to come, so that you can decide for yourself!

| This lecture is another in our continuing Chautauqua Learning Series. The Learning Series is based on the Chautauqua
movement which spread throughout the rural United States in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. It provided educational lectures and entertainment
for average Americans before the advent of mass media like radio and television.
The Texas Frontier Heritage and Cultural Center™ is proud to continue the
spirit of that tradition in the unique setting of the Buffalo Gap Historic
Village. |
