March is officialy designated National Women’s History Month, and so it is a fitting time to look at the position of women in the world
today. We like to think that women enjoy more opportunities than ever before.
Women are business executives and politicians and doctors. They lead the
governments in many parts of the world. Yet they are also more at risk
than ever before. In war zones, they are the first victims. They are the
majority of the millions of refugees in the world. Some American women
may think that they have come a long way, but many women have never even
gotten started. Are women really better off throughout the world than they
used to be, or worse? Addressing the challenges facing women in the 21st
century will be Dr. Tina Bertrand, Associate Professor of Political Science
at McMurry University. Anyone interested in these complex issues will not
want to miss Dr. Bertrand’s insights. |

| The Global State of Women is another presentation in our ongoing Chautauqua Learning Series. The
Learning Series is based on the Chautauqua movement which spread throughout
the rural United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It provided
educational lectures and entertainment for average Americans before the
advent of mass media like radio and television. The Texas Frontier Heritage
and Cultural Center™ is proud to continue the spirit of that tradition
in the unique setting of the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. |
