1925 Area

Just as the railroad transformed West Texas in the 1880s, so, too, did the automobile in the years after World War I.


Cottonwood Flat SchoolCottonwood Flat School
This is a two-room rural school house dating from 1930. It replaced an earlier structure from the 1920s. The school was originally located in Scurry County. It is ths site of our Cottonwood School Program during the regular school year.

BournTexaco Service StationBourn Texaco Service Station
The prominent Texaco sign is one of the first things you see if you’re driving to the Village from the east. The station was originally built in 1926 in Winters, Texas, as a family-owned independent and then Magnolia Oil service station . The Bourn family later used it as a Texaco station.

BankThe Bank

This building represents a banking institution of the 1920s. The furnishings are from the First State Bank of Buffalo Gap and were later used at the Hunt Bank in Bradshaw. An exhibit on banking in Texas and Buffalo Gap is found in the back room of the building. For more on banking in Texas, click here. One of the most famous bank robberies in Texas actually occurred in West Texas, specifically in Cisco, east of Abilene.

Buffalo Gap Post Office

This is the first freestanding post office in Buffalo Gap. It was built around 1950 near the corner of Litel and Main Streets on the south side of the town.
Print Shop
The Print Shop

This building houses a collection of early 20th century printing equipment, machinery which was used to produce newspapers and books before the advent of computers and laser printers.
