Left: The main (and only) entrance. The machine beneath it is a Linotype machine. For several centuries after Gutenberg, pieces of cold lead type were set together by hand. The Linotype machine used molten lead which was poured into letter molds on the fly as the operator typed on the keyboard. In the lower right is a Heidelberg printing press, a common feature in print shops until letterpress technology was replaced by offset printing. The lead type was locked tightly into a frame, inked by rollers, and pressed against sheets of paper (hence the term “letterpress”). |
